I was in for something of a shock when I saw the “Likes and Interests – Music” category on Liam Madden‘s Facebook page. Next to the perfectly respectable bands U2 and R.E.M. was the name of the dreaded country/pop singer T-Swizzle.

It’s certainly not the first perceived self-contradiction for the 6’4″ sports fan. He listed his Political Views as aligned with the Democratic Party, yet one of his Pages proclaimed him one of the “1,000,000 Strong SUPPORTING Arizona Immigration Law SB1070.”

“A lot of people are surprised by that,” said Liam. “I’m pretty liberal with most things, socially and fiscally, but not with illegal immigration.” Though he’s only been interested in politics for about a year, he supported the healthcare bill as well as the stimulus.

It’s an unusual yet balanced perspective that extends further than just politics. He watches Hardball with Chris Matthews (seen on msnbc.com) as well as Fox News. Liam ‘like’s the page The Grilled Cheese Invitational (“Bread-Butter-Cheese-Victory!”), and said he was a judge last year for the event; but it’s comforting to see that a character as interesting as this one can still be a fan of George Orwell‘s novels Animal Farm and 1984.

So maybe I was wrong about my initial misgivings about his musical preference. Liam’s not necessarily entirely self-contradictory, let’s call it more “open-minded.”
