Alyssa Spear (right) won first place for kick dance in this year's Santiago Shark Splash Spectacular.

What could be better than a Starbucks drink for girls? A Starbucks themed kick dance routine of course.

Alyssa Spear, 16, of Walnut, and the rest of the Walnut High School dance team took home first place in February’s Santiago Shark Splash Spectacular with their kick routine centered on the world famous coffee café.

Spear has been dancing since she was four years old and decided to join the kick team in high school.

“It’s one of the most rewarding experiences because when you get into that kick line the crowd just cheers more than anything else,” Spear said.

For those not familiar with kick, a group of dancers forms a line and performs a kick routine. Still confused? Think of the Rockettes.

Spear appreciates dancing for its unspoken communication skills and the experiences she shares with her teammates.

“I love being able to express [myself] in ways that other mediums can’t,” Spears said. “I love dancing to tell a story and I love being in front of a crowd.”

Once the school year begins Spear and the rest of her dance team will begin preparing for a national dance competition, which will be held in Anaheim.
