Alyssa Spear had the opportunity to see Paris, Barcelona, and two parts of Italy this summer- in only three days. “It was not long enough!” Alyssa said. She did, however, visit many beautiful places in this short amount of time. She stated, “I loved seeing the culture at each place; each place had its own unique spark.”
On this trip with her aunt and uncle, Alyssa did traditional sight-seeing, like visiting the Eiffel Tower. She also saw some attractions that are not as well known, such as Musée d’Orsay. In Barcelona, Spain, she watched flamenco dancing and visited Palau de la Musica Catalana (Palace of Catalan Music). She explained that much of the ceiling is made of glass, and the acoustics are really good for non-electric instruments like organs.
Alyssa said that one of the most interesting parts of her trip was seeing Antoni Gaudí’s architecture in Spain. Gaudí built a church in Barcelona, the Sagrada Família, which is still in the process of being built. She loves Barcelona’s “emphasis on beauty”. Even designs were engraved on the sidewalks, which is “so different from where we live,” she told me.
From the little I know about Spain (and other parts of Europe) and from what Alyssa enlightened me with today, art is a prevalent aspect in people’s daily lives in many cities. I hope that in the future, more cities, including my own, will support and incorporate art into people’s lives as they go about their day, whether it be through architecture, music, or other forms of creative expression.
