New York, New York

When I asked Annette Semerdjian where she is from, she replied, “I live in New York!……..in my head.”

Annette, who graduated high school this year, traveled to Hawaii at a very young age with her grandparents. She remembers the trip perfectly, though, and even remembers being upset when her grandma wouldn’t let her take a horse home with her! She returned to Hawaii some time later, around age 7, with her whole family.

Besides Hawaii, Annette has not traveled much, but this doesn’t stop her from a desire to go places! More than anywhere in the world, she wants to go to Times Square, New York City. “New York is a fast-paced attitude kind of place,” she said. Annette told me how she loves the idea of living in a liberal and exciting city; she feels like she would easily connect to the people living there. She told me about her interest in the ballroom scene of New York, which I honestly knew nothing about until talking to her!

Annette has an amazing culture, too. She is Armenian and told me about her home life. Her family, although not necessarily traditional, is still very cultural. They eat lots of Middle Eastern food, such as tabuleh. I actually didn’t know what this was, so I googled it and found a tasty looking recipe here! I think I’ll try making it once I get home! Annette then asked me if I have ever seen the film My Big Fat Greek Wedding. She told me that her family is exactly like Toula’s family. Of course, it’s one of my favorite movies, so, uh, that is pretty darn awesome.

Anyway, I loved hearing about Annette’s heritage as well as her dreams of traveling to New York; she is an amazing girl and I know she will go there someday!
