I thought that I was alone when it came to being afraid of the dark. At every sleepover I am always the paranoid one who needs a reassuring nightlight, or at home, I am the crazy one who needs the bathroom light on while I sleep. It seems like a childhood issue, but in reality being scared off the dark is a plague to many.
Ritika Iyer has carried the burden of being afraid of the dark for as long as she can remember. Like me, she is the only one in her household to have this fetish fear of the dark.
“I freak out and look for the closest light to turn on,” Iyer said about her reaction to being in deepness of the shadowy unknown.
How is it that people become scared of the dark? Is it the haunting movies we watch where an unexplained monster reveals itself from the dimness? Maybe its just a reaction to the dark matter that is forever unseen.
Maybe people became scared of the dark because it’s formed into a natural instinct. The dark conceals predators. Those that do not fear the dark and are reckless are more prone to accidents and death. Natural selection, I guess. It was just more to a human’s advantage to avoid the dark, and be cautious. I don’t know – my theory!
