Today all the students handed out copies of their newspapers. It was really interesting to see other layouts, stories, photos, and just the overall similarities and differences between our newspapers. One thing that really struck me about the newspapers of the other students was almost every newspaper had a slip in ad or printed ad for driving schools.
This was so surprising to me. I had never seen another high school newspaper with ads for driving schools or slip in ads. My newspaper sells a lot of ads each year, but I never recall a driving school placing an ad in our newspaper.
Lindsey Agnew of San Dieguito Academy said, “We get a lot of funding for our newspaper by distributing ads about driving schools. I know a lot of other high schools run ads in the papers from driving schools. I think that high schools are a great market for driving schools because it targets the right age group.”
Katie Richcreek of Colton High School said, “Driving schools adversities at least in two issues each year. In California, you have to take drivers ed before you can get your permit and you have to take 3 classes of three hours behind the wheel with an instructor. I think that is why driving schools buy so many ads in high school newspapers.”
When I discovered this I realized why there are so many driving school ads in high school newspapers. New drivers are required to take classes at driving schools in California while in New York, you only have to take one five hour class and can get hours of driving just with your parents.
I was really interested by this finding and I hope to reach out to driving schools near my school and hopefully will have the same success as the other newspapers in California have had.
