In 1951, a group of high school students gathered on the campus of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo for a crash course in sports writing, photography and other journalism skills.
The workshop was part of newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst’s efforts to train students to cover prep sports for the Los Angeles Examiner, and it was supposed to be a one-time thing.
The workshop kept going the next summer, and then the next. And 75 years later, we’re still here. We’ve helped launch hundreds of careers in journalism and other forms of communication, creating a network of alumni that has touched every major publication in the United States and has spanned the globe.
This summer, we invite you to join us in San Luis Obispo on Saturday, July 18 during the summer workshop to celebrate our 75th anniversary.
